Hamsa Necklace

This image is a Hamsa or Hamseh hand. It is symbol that is present in both Arabic and Jewish traditions. It is used as an amulet to ward off the evil eye.
I saw a fellow classmate of mine wearing this necklace during a class presentation. So after class I approached her to ask her about it. Before doing any research I guessed that the symbol was possibly Hindu. I asked her if she knew what the symbol was and she laughed and said no my friends got it for me as a gift. It is from the popular company Alex and Ani. This jewelry assigns meanings to all of its jewelry, she said that this meaning was why her friends bought it for her. She also informed me that she was actually a Catholic and had no idea that this was any type of religious symbol.
The Alex and Ani website calls this piece "the hand of Fatima" and that it "Originating from the Hebrew word "hamesh," literally meaning "five," the Hand of Fatima is an ancient talisman that symbolizes feminine power. The hand is worn as a defense against negative energy as it deflects the gaze of the evil eye away from the wearer. Believed to channel the forces of good, embrace the energy of the Hand of Fatima Charm that promotes healing and fosters miracles." This meaning is very similar to the traditional religious iconography however it has been Americanized by this company.
